UASIN GISHU,Kenya, Sept, 23 – The cash-strapped Moi University has agreed to settle a medical bill amounting to Sh168 million to a private hospital in Eldoret town for medical services rendered to its staff and their spouses.

In a consent signed between the public learning institution and Mediheal hospital before Justice Eric Ogola of Eldoret High Court Thursday, the university committed to pay Sh 2 million monthly until the whole amount is cleared.

Justice Ogola, who presided over the matter, consented to the agreement terming it an order of the court.

The hospital, owned by former Kesses MP Swarup Mishra, moved to court two years ago after the university defaulted to pay the money owed to it for medical services rendered to the institution’s 3,000 staff and their spouses.

According to court documents, the university had entered into an arrangement with the private hospital 10 years ago whereby its staff and spouses were to be treated at the facility.

Lawyer, Aloo Romana represented the hospital in the suit while Lawyer Eric Liyali represented Moi University.

Liyali told the court that his client was ready and willing to abide by the signed agreement regarding the payment of pending medical bills to the hospital estimated at Sh168m.

This was after the lawyer for the hospital raised concern over the failure by the university to clear the outstanding medical bill despite several reminders.

The judge advised the hospital management that they were at liberty to come back to court in the event the university defaulted on its agreement to settle the outstanding bill.
