NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept, 27 – The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti has resigned from his post with immediate effect in news announced by president William Ruto at State House Nairobi.
It is however not clear why the country’s top detective vacated his position despite his tenure in office still being in place.
“I have also received the resignation of the director general of CID Mr Kinoti and I have transmitted the same to the National Police Service to proceed with advertising that position and meanwhile they should get somebody to act in the place of Mr Kinoti,” said President William Ruto.
Kinoti took over the helm at the DCI in 2018 after being appointed by former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
Since 2018, he has spearheaded several programmes within the DCI to improve service delivery and also boost the morale of investigators across the country.
During his time in office, Kinoti was also at the receiving end of various civil society organizations who called on him to be firm, and decisive, and to uphold the rule of law amid his case of human rights violations and cases of extra-judicial killings and disappearances.
A section of politicians also accused him of missing his power to settle political scores on behalf of his ‘bosses’.
Officers within the DCI expressed shock at his early departure but wished him the best of luck.
The Outgoing DCI boss, Kinoti, was earlier this year elected as INTERPOL’s Africa representative.
