NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept, 27 – Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has proceeded on terminal leave, effectively vacating his position as the country’s top police boss.
The news was announced by president William Ruto while announcing his picks for the Cabinet among other senior government positions.
“I have received communication from the inspector general of Police of his request to proceed on terminal leave because of his health situation. I have after discussing with Mr. Mutyambai and in consideration of his service to our nation and his health situation I have accepted that Mutyambai will proceed on terminal leave on the six months that he still has of his contract,” said Ruto.
Mutyambai has been battling illness for the last couple of years in turn affecting his service delivery.
Last month the IG was admitted to hospital after he reportedly collapsed at his Karen home.
The police boss has since been discharged and is under home care treatment.
He had been admitted to the High Dependency unit for three days before later being moved to a normal ward for observation.
The news of his illness forced Mutyambai to appoint his substantive Deputy IG (AP) Noor Gabow as Acting Inspector General of Police.
“In my absence, Mr Noor Gabow, the Deputy Inspector General – Administration Police Service, will act as the Inspector General of the National Police Service until my return,” said Mutyambai in a statement earlier this month.
Back in 2020, Mutyambai while also falling ill, designated DIG Kenya Police Edward Mbugua as acting IG.
The President can appoint an acting IG to serve for a period of three months in the event an IG has been suspended from office or is incapable of performing his functions.
