NAKURU, Kenya, Oct, 26 – A police officer in Nakuru county has been arrested and another is being sought after following the mysterious disappearance of a firearm at Rongai Police Station,Nakuru county.
It had been reported at Rongai Police Station by Hosea Kipkulei, a police officer domiciled at the same station that his firearm, an Ak47 serial number 769792 loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition had been stolen.
He said he lost the firearm on Tuesday at Rongai trading centre while on mobile patrol in the company of Amos Kogei and Samuel Langat, a civilian driver while on night patrol.
MrJesse Wafula, OCS Rongai, immediately mobilized the officers within the station and started looking for the firearm.
During the search, information reached the team that one Elkana Putin who declared a deserter from service on October 9, 2022, had been sighted on a motorcycle heading to Salgaa while armed with a firearm.
The OCS and his team made a follow-up but failed to trace Putin or recover the firearm.
The team decided to visit Putin’s house at Rongai trading centre where he stays with his girlfriend Lucy Mwihaki but still didn’t find him as the house was locked from outside.
Putin was later found at the police line in the house he was allocated. The firearm was found on him at this house.
Putin was arrested and will be charged for the offence of stealing a firearm and ammunition.
Hosea Kipkulei who reported losing the firearm has since gone underground as the police are searching for him.
If found, Kupkulei will be charged with loss by neglect of a firearm and ammunition.
