NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 8 – Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said that his ministry welcomes a court order directing striking pilots to resume duty.
In a statement to newsrooms, Murkomen said that the past four days the strike has been in place, were difficult while apologizing to those affected by the strike.
He called on the Kenya Airways (KQ) management to obey the court order which bars them from victimizing the striking pilots.
“I urge our pilots to obey the court order and resume their duties,” his statement reads.
He said that if the strike had not been stopped, it would have led to the airline shutting down given it was losing Sh300 million daily.
The closure would have affected 18,000 lives that depend on the airline. The strike he said had led to the cancellation of 300 flights affecting over 12,000 customers and had also affected 3,500 employees.
According to Murkomen, his ministry will work to ensure that issues between the pilots and KQ are resolved and that the issues plaguing the airline are dealt with to return it to profitability.
