UN Calls For Climate Action As A Global Priority During COP27 Conference

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov, 8 – With the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27 kicking off today discussions on climate change and how to mitigate its effects globally are set to take center stage in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

The United Nations secretary General Antonia Guterres has called world leaders to commit in finding solutions that can stop and prevent global hunger.

The UN Secretary-General said Drought, heatwaves, and floods have a devastating impact on food production.

“The unfolding global food crises cannot be stopped until nations manage the climate change,” Antonio Guterres tweeted.

The Secretary-General said Climate disasters are already hurting countries, communities, and economies, noting that the COP27 will present a crucial opportunity for leaders to make meaningful progress on climate promises.

“Climate action must become the global priority we need it to be,”

The Africa Group of Negotiators (AGN) has called on the African Civil Society not to relent in supporting Africa’s agenda at COP27.

Addressing the African Civil Society groups under the auspices of the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, AGN Chair, Ephriam Mwepya Shitima emphasized the importance of the civil society voice in the climate justice discourse.

Mr. Shitima commended PACJA for its tireless efforts in galvanizing the African civil society to rally behind the African negotiating block and ensuring that the African climate justice call is heard and recognized.

And speaking earlier, PACJA Executive Director, Mithika Mwenda assured of the African civil society’s support for the AGN as negotiating block presses on Africa’s priorities at COP27.
