NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 9 – Members of Parliament have approved the nomination of Eng Japheth Koome as the new Inspector General (IG) of Police pending appointment by President William Ruto.
Parliament adopted the report tabled by the National Security Defence and National Relations Committee on Koome’s approval after his vetting on Tuesday.
The motion for Koome’s approval as IG was tabled by the Senate Security Committee chairman William Cheptumo.
In the report, Koome met all the requirements to hold the docket adding that his experience of 30 years in service made him the best candidate for the post.
After his appointment, Koome will take over from acting IG Noor Gabow who took the reins of the Police after former IG Hillary Mutyambai tendered his resignation citing health issues.
Before his resignation, Mutyambai went on leave on August 26 for medical reasons, and he appointed Noor Gabow to serve in an acting capacity.
Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda and his Nyamira counterpart described Koome as a professional who is highly qualified and educated adding that they expect him to professionalize the National Police Service.
MPs while discussing the motion said that they hope that once appointed, Koome will be keen on tackling corruption as well as improving the welfare of the police officers.
