NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 10 – An auctioneer who was arrested following the demolition of an Sh80 million house in Westlands, Nairobi has been released on a cash bail of Sh200,000.
Zacharia Baraza was released by the court after spending one day in police custody.
Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe rejected an application to detain the suspect for 14 days to allow police to complete investigations into the incident.
Niraj Shah and his wife Avani Shah had their house demolished by a group of unknown people after presenting a court order to demolish the property, despite the couple obtaining a court order stopping the demolition.
Baraza would later get arrested after Police accused him of having a court order to evict the family. The couple says that have occupied the property for over 40 years.
Speaking to the press Mr Shah said his wife was given 30 minutes to move their property from the house before it was brought down. He says that he incurred losses totalling more than Sh70 million.
While giving the order Shikwe said that police had not given enough reasons to warrant the detainment of Baraza. He ordered Baraza to report to investigators whenever needed.
