NAROK, Kenya, Nov 12 – Police at the Narok town police station donated relief food to drought-stricken families in the county.

Narok Central Sub County Police Commander Frederick Shiundu said the food given includes two bags of maize (each 90 kilograms), one bag of beans (90 kilograms), 30 litres of cooking fat, 100 kilograms of sugar, 100 kilograms of rice and 12 dozen of maize floor.

Shiundu said the officers sacrificed their day’s lunch to buy food for the vulnerable families who were struggling to place a plate of food on the table.

He spoke yesterday at the Narok town police station where he handed over the food to the Red Cross Society for distribution saying many residents have a mistaken notion that police are heartless people which he said is not true.

The police boss asked those who are well off to help in giving food to the vulnerable groups so that no person in the county will go to bed on an empty stomach.

“We are not ignorant of what is happening in the country. Some families are starving because of the persistent drought. We give the food as a sign of love and we will continue doing so,” he reiterated.

Narok Red Cross Society Coordinator Sylestine Ogutu lauded the police force for the kind gesture and called on all residents who had extra food to give through their office for distribution.

Ms Ogutu said the food will be distributed after consultation with the County Steering Group (CSG) to the most vulnerable families in the county.

The government has distributed 400 bags of rice and 160 bags of beans to each of the eight sub-counties in the county to mitigate the effects of drought.

Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde, in a past CSG meeting, confirmed that about 115, 000 families and another 300, 000 school-going children were in dire need of food in the county.
