KISII, Kenya, Nov 19 – Kisii Governor Simba Arati has launched a Kisii Boda Boda Transport Cooperative Society Limited to empower riders through the savings kitty
“I want to thank the leaders of this organisation for initiating this idea, boda boda industry forms an integral part of the economic development of the country and the country at large as the governor is here to support you and am already a member of this SACCO,” said the governor.
Arati said, the bodaboda industry has created thousands of Jobs countrywide and they are considered as fast, efficient and reliable with the ability to access all places for many Kenyans to use as a means of transport.
He added that the Sacco will give riders the financial muscle to pull resources and also engage in discipline among themselves and have a smooth operation.
The formation of the Sacco is a fulfilment of one of governor Arati’s pledges to motorcyclists, who played a critical role in crossing every part of the county to drum up support for the county chief during the run-up to the August elections.
Governor Arati who made a personal donation of Sh3 million and added another Sh2 million which he said had been given by President William Ruto, asked those who had not seen the need to be in a Sacco to do so as quickly as possible as great things await them.
“tell those who have not joined to do so we want every rider to be part of this journey. We must empower our young men in bodaboda by putting money in their pocket,” Mr Arati said while adding that nobody will embezzle the Sacco funds under his watch.
Governor Arati said the Sacco will streamline the sector to enhance security, peace and safety awareness for both the operators and the passengers.
“In the next ten months we will be seated here with Sh200 million in our account, trust me it’s possible, we wanted to grow together and also force money in your pocket if you are doubting Thomas,” said Arati.
Kisii Central Deputy County Commissioner Wilberforce Kilonzo applauded the operators for keeping the peace during the general elections and encouraged them not to turn back.
Mr Kilonzo who oversaw the peaceful election of bodaboda leaders last year, told members to solve their issues in an amicable way and at the same time asked them to be keen off criminal elements who masquerade as operators yet their motive is to cause havoc.
“I am happy that we oversaw a smooth election that gave you leaders. We will work with you and please let us maintain peace for the betterment of our society,” Mr Kilonzo added.
In order to increase their savings, every member will be required to deposit Sh2,000 per month after the initial registration of Sh500.
On his side, the governor promised to be depositing another Sh50,000 per month as a member towards their savings kitty.
