GARISSA, Kenya December 7 – Cases of examination cheating are on the rise in the counties of Garissa and Wajir.
In one of the cases, a copy of Kiswahili examination paper with answers was found in possession of candidates at Salman Secondary School in Garissa.
Garissa Sub County Director of Education the local Teachers Service Commission director said as they were monitoring the ongoing examinations, they noticed a candidate hiding a paper on his waist.
As a result, a search was immediately mounted where the photocopies of Kiswahili Paper Two with answers were recovered.
In a second room at the same school, another copy was recovered from another candidate.
Local police commander said several examination officials were arrested including the school’s principal, a supervisor, and two invigilators.
They are being held at Garissa Police Station.
On the first day of the test, 29 mobile phones were confiscated in a school in Dadaab Sub County, within the same county.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO Dr. David Nyeng’ere who was visiting the area said detectives were investigating the matter.
He attributed the Dadaab case to the failure of invigilators to do proper frisking of candidates.
In Wajir County, seven officials are being probed by detectives after cases of malpractice were unearthed at Eldas Boys Secondary School in the ongoing KCSE examinations.
On Tuesday, detectives from Eldas Police Station received intelligence that exam cheating was going on at the centre and they visited the classroom in question where Chemistry Paper One was ongoing.
After the test was concluded, the officers conducted a search inside the examination room and recovered three mobile phones inside the lockers. Mobile phones belonging to three candidates and examination officials were confiscated.
Two Police Constables also had their phones confiscated from the Eldas examination centre.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at Eldas police station is probing the matter according to a police report seen by Shahidi News.
