NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 14 – The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a senior sergeant attached to the Environment Section of the Nairobi County Government on suspicion that he solicited a Sh100,000 bribe.

Joseph Kiplang’at Leitich, who works in the department of regulating waste management, is accused of extorting the bribe from a complainant in order to stop the prosecution of three people who had been arrested and were due to be charged for waste dumping before a city court.

The three were arrested and detained at the Central Police Station on Saturday, December 10, and were released the next day on a Sh5,000 cash bond and were to appear in court on Tuesday, December 13.

Kiplang’at is said to have requested a bribe from the employer of the three saying that he was in a position to secure their release.

The employer refused to pay the bribe and asked the employees to appear before the court as directed, when they turned up for their hearing their names were not called and there were no charges against them and there was no communication regarding their fate.

The employer then alerted the EACC and investigations were launched where Kiplang’at was arrested by EACC detectives while receiving a Sh30,000 bribe.

He recorded a statement and was released on a cash bail as investigations into the matter continue.
