MERU, Kenya, Dec 14 – Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been impeached after Members of the County Assembly unanimously voted in favour of the motion.
Sixty-Seven out of 69 MCAs who were present voted to oust Mwangaza for gross violation of the Constitution, nepotism, illegal appointments, unlawful dismissals and misleading campaigns against other leaders.
This move by MCA’s comes after the High Court in Nairobi saved her from the first impeachment motion that had been tabled in the County Assembly.
Mwangaza fell out with MCAs, shortly after they had been sworn into office. She accused them of an attempt to arm-twist her over the ward development fund and the MCA’s accused her of being a lone ranger and refused to heed to calls for consultations on how to run the county.
Mwangaza’s fate now lies with the Senate, where senators will vote to either uphold or dismiss the impeachment motion.
Mwangaza, became the first woman governor in the Meru after winning the seat on an independent ticket, defeating Mithika Linturi of UDA and Kiraitu Murungi of the Devolution Empowerment Party.
