NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 15 – The High Court has granted the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) orders to freeze two properties registered to the wife of former Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria.
The two properties are parcels of land located in Umoja Innercore and Mweiga and are valued at Sh16.3 million.
The orders came from a suit by the anti-graft body against the former governor in which they are seeking to recover Sh542,610,615.
EACC says that Wa Iria embezzled Murang’a County money while he was governor and invested it in properties registered to him and his wife.
Wa Iria is accused of using his position to solely award a media contract worth Sh542,610,615 to Top Image Media Consultants between the financial years 2013/14 and 2016/17.
Recommendations by the anti-graft body to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission saw Wa Iria barred from running for the Presidency in the August 2022 elections over his integrity and suitability.
He ended his ambitions by throwing his weight behind Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua.
