NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 15 – Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has confirmed receipt of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment motion.
Mwangaza was impeached on Wednesday, December 14, with 67 Members of the County of Assembly who were present voting to oust her over gross misconduct, abuse of office and violation of the constitution.
The Meru County Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi, on Thursday, December 15, sent to the Senate the impeachment motion.
Speaker Kingi is expected to convene a special sitting to debate on the motion in seven days.
Senate may choose to appoint a committee of eleven senators to investigate the grounds for Mwangaza’s impeachment.
Once formed, the committee will have 10 days to hear the matter and submit its recommendations to the House.
If the committee finds that the grounds for her impeachment are proven, it can recommend her ouster but the whole house will vote for or against it and her fate will lie on the number of votes in her favour but she will be given a fair hearing before the voting takes place.
