KISII, Kenya, Dec 20 – A 38-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to selling her two-month-old baby for Sh4,000.

Priscah Kwamboka appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Ogweno for illegally giving out her baby for adoption.

According to the charge sheet, Kwamboka on December 13, at Nyagena location in Kisii South together with Ziporrah Moraa traded Brighton Momanyi for Sh4,000.

Moraa was charged with giving out money to get the baby illegally contrary to the law.

Prosecutor Hilary Kaino told the court to be given time to amend the charges from child adoption to human trafficking to also go in hand with the children’s act.

The court ordered the amendment of the charges meanwhile the suspects were detained at Gesonso police station.

The two suspects pleaded guilty to committing the offence.

The magistrate said for the purpose of amending the charges, the child to remain with his grandmother

“The baby will be under the custody of his grandmother till tomorrow when the children’s officer will appear in court for directions,” said SRM Ogweno.

It is alleged Kwamboka who is a mother of five got her last-born son out of wedlock and after her husband who works in Nairobi discovered she was pregnant he separated from her and remained with the other four sons.

She went to her parent’s home where she was also chased away, she had to seek refuge at her cousin’s place and gave birth but she was chased to go to her matrimonial home.

This is when she decided to sell this child to get some money and travel to the city to search for a job.
