NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 22 – A security officer has been sentenced to serve a six-year sentence after he pleaded guilty to escorting thieves to break into his workstation.

Fredrick Barasa Wabwoba was charged with five counts: four counts of breaking into a building and one count of neglecting to prevent a commission of a felony.

According to the charge sheet, Wabwoba being a security guard employed by Group Work Security Limited was assigned to guard London Beauty Centre, along Taveta Road in Nairobi.

The prosecution says that he failed to prevent it from being broken into by the robbers on December 4, 2022.

The accused together with others, not before the court also broke into Cristec mobile services and supplies, I-happy computers limited, Christdom Enterprises and Creations by Mokeira shop Nairobi branch.

They stole Two mobile phones (a Samsung tablet and a Neon Ray), Laptop and laptop accessories and Fabrics all worth Sh610,600.

In his mitigation, the accused told the court that the three thieves overpowered him breaking into the premises.

He also told the court that the thieves promised to give him his share of Sh300,000 if he allowed them into the building, and due to his life pressure and his salary, he agreed to escort them to different stalls in his workstation.

“I earn a salary of Sh7000 which does not even solve half of my problems, the money that was being given to me would have been a big help to me as I have kids who are in school and I take full responsibility for my family,” he said.

A guard who works the daytime shift reported the matter to his bosses and from Police investigations, the accused together with others were captured by CCTV cameras while committing the crime.

The accused then disappeared and switched off his phone before he was spotted in the city by one of his managers, who alerted members of the public. He was then arrested and arraigned in court.

Chief Magistrate Wendy Micheni sentenced Wabwoba to 2 years imprisonment on the first count and 1-year imprisonment for each of the other counts.
