NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 22 – President William Ruto has appointed former Chief Justice David Maraga to chair the task force tasked with recommending improvements to the terms and conditions of service in the police.
The announcement by Ruto was made in a gazette notice dated December 21, where he said that there was a need to improve the working condition of police officers.
Ruto said that the government was working to ensure that officers have adequate resources and support to carry out their duties.
He said that the Kenya Kwanza government is going to address welfare challenges which he said have hindered the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) from doing their jobs well.
Maraga will be deputized by Carole Kariuki. Members of the task force are Obrahim Guyo, Moffat Kangi, Stephen Kayongo, John Moyaki, Elizabeth Mueni, Roseline Odede, Joash Dache, Doreen Muthaura and Albert Mwenda.
Others are Terry Maina, Hassan Mohamed, Capt. (Rtd) Simiyu Werunga, Mutuma Ruteere, Anne Ireri, Jafaar Mohammed, Sammy Chepkwony, Richard Kirundi and Khadija Mire.
Omwanza Ombati, Joy Mdivo Masinde and Rosemary Kamau will be the task force’s joint secretaries.
They are expected to present a report in 90 days and will be domiciled at the Ministry of Interior and National Coordination.
They will be required to review and give legal recommendations on conditions of service within NPS and KPS as well as operational reforms and the welfare of the servicemen.
