NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 22 – Seven suspects charged with the murder of former Kabete Member of Parliament and trade unionist George Muchai have been released on bail by a Milimani Court.

Justice Momanyi Bwonwonga granted each one of them a cash bail of Sh500,000 or alternatively pay a bond of Sh700,000 and sureties of the same amount.

Justice Momanyi said that he granted them bail on this particular case on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to avail documentary evidence including call data that the court had ordered to be availed to the defence in 2019 which has delayed the case.

Justice James Wakiaga who was presiding over the case at the time, ordered the prosecution in May 2019, to provide the defence team with Safaricom and Airtel data which was to be used as evidence against the seven.

They were ordered to report to investigators at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations central division once a month.

Even if they were to pay the money as directed, they face another charge of violently robbing the legislator within Nairobi’s CBD.

The prosecution’s case against the seven has seen a total of 32 witnesses take to the stand to testify with nine who are mostly experts expected to give their testimony in the coming days.

The case will be heard on January 23, 2023.
