MALINDI, Kenya, Dec 21 – Tension was high at the Malindi Airport gate in Kilifi County after a bodaboda operator was shot dead in unclear circumstances by a police officer.
Eyewitnesses stated that a police officer is believed to have shot the bodaboda rider around 7pm.
Angry bodaboda riders barricaded the road and started pelting stones at the police officers stationed at the airport, making it difficult to move the body prompting police to shoot in the air to disperse them.
It is alleged that the bodaboda operator picked up the officer from a club taking him to the airport where he was supposed to report for duty at the entrance gate.
Upon reaching the airport main gate an argument ensued between the rider and the officer, with witnesses saying that he didn’t want to pay for the service, prompting him to pull his gun and shot the rider.
The deceased hails from Mijomboni in Gede. His colleagues called for speedy investigations into the matter saying that the officer responsible for the rider’s death should be arrested and arraigned in court.
Malindi sub-county deputy county commissioner Thuo Ngungi confirmed the incident, saying that investigations have already been launched.
