ELDORET, Kenya, Jan 11 – Model and LGBTQ activist Edwin Kiprotich Kiptoo alias Edwin Chiloba died due to lack of oxygen since his mouth and nose were covered, a post-mortem has shown.
Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor who conducted the autopsy at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital said that Chiloba’s mouth and nose could have been covered with a jeans cloth which led to the death.
Oduor said that Chiloba’s mouth had been stuffed with three pairs of socks, adding that several body parts had been taken for toxicology to ascertain whether he had been poisoned before he was killed.
According to Oduor, the activist’s body did not have missing parts as earlier reported, adding that his eyes came off because his body was already decomposing when it was discovered.
Chiloba’s body was discovered stashed in a metallic box along the Kipenyo – Kaptinga road, in Kapsaret, Uasin Gishu County on January 6, after he went missing for days.
Reports at the time were that a vehicle with concealed number plates was dropping the box by a bodaboda rider who alerted police manning a roadblock nearby.
When the police opened the box, they found the body of a man dressed in a woman’s clothes, which was later established to be that of Chiloba who until his death ran a fashion business in Eldoret.
His close friend Jackton Odhiambo would later be arrested with the police saying that he is the main suspect in the murder. He has since denied the charge.
Odhiambo alongside four others, among them three minors, will be in Police custody for the next 20 days after an Eldoret court gave Police more time to conclude investigations into the murder.
Police said that they need to access CCTV footage from the entertainment joint where Chiloba was last seen before his disappearance and that they would to forensically examine the vehicle which was used to dump his body.
The case will be mentioned on January 31, 2023.
