A police imposter who robbed two men of their cash and forced them to transfer cash to his Mpesa account at gunpoint at Utawala on December 15 was later arrested at the same scene while extorting money from another man.

Ben Angwenyi Barongo, who was on Monday January 23 charged in court is said to have robbed Alex Muthiani Kasyoka of Sh3,750 and Titus Mwangi of Sh4,700 last year while armed with a pistol. The two men were walking towards Embakasi from Utawala when they were stopped Barongo who was clad in a jungle green T-shirt with the General Service Unit (GSU) logo.

He handcuffed them before leading them to a nearby thicket where allegedly robbed them while assaulting them with a plastic pipe. The suspect also forced the two men to send Sh1000 each to his phone number. He later released the two and ordered them to disappear before he took off towards the Utawala area.

The victims reported the matter at the Embakasi Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the detectives launched investigations.

On January 17, detectives nabbed him at the same scene, donning the same T-shirt with the GSU logo. He had detained another victim from whom he was demanding a bribe.

“The pipe he had allegedly used to assault Kasyoka and Mwangi was recovered from him and was positively identified by the victims,” the local police commander said.

On Monday, he was charged with robbery with violence before Makadara Senior Resident Magistrate Mercy Malingu and released on a bond of Sh500, 000 without an option of a cash bail.
The case will be mentioned on February 28 before hearing starts on April 3.
