NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 28 – Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i is under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
EACC boss Twalib Mbarak wrote to the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei seeking information on the wealth declared by Matiang’i between 2012-2022.
“Pursuant to Section 30(1) (4) (b) of the Public Officers Ethics Act, the commission wishes to request for certified copies of Declaration of Income, Assets and Liabilities forms for years 2012 to 2022, including the initial and final declarations,” the letter reads in part.
According to Mbarak, the documents will be collected by Mr Abdul Low and Mr Paul Mugwe.
The move by EACC comes at a time when Matiang’i failed to honour summons to appear before Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) investigators last Friday.
His lawyers led by Danstun Omari denounced the summons saying they had not been signed, adding that their client was ready to appear at DCI when summoned.
The DCI went after Matiang’i on accusations that he gave false information about a supposed raid by police on his Karen home on February 8, 2023. On February 9, his lawyers obtained anticipatory bail which prevents his arrest.
The DCI also summoned his lawyer Omari to shed more information about the raid. Omari went to court and obtained orders suspending the summon until the case is heard and determined. The case will be mentioned on March 8.
