Lawyer Danstan Omari, representing former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, has said that his client travelled to the United Kingdom to attend to an urgent private matter.
In a statement to newsrooms, Omari sought to distance his client from reports that he fled the country after it emerged that he was under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
Already the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been investigating Matiang’i for giving false information over a failed raid at his Karen home that his lawyers say was meant to arrest him.
Omari stated that these reports were casting “unfair aspersions” on his client and should be examined more carefully before being made public.
He also said that the reports were “clearly stage-managed wars and evidently driven by inexplicable vendetta and malice.”
Omari clarified that Matiang’i had informed senior security sector and diplomatic officials about his two-week trip to the UK, which he took on Sunday, February 19, aboard KLM Flight KL 566.
Regarding the ongoing probe, Omari said that his client was unaware of any investigations against him, but he is willing to cooperate with the authorities when required. He also welcomed any action taken by officers as it is their constitutional mandate.
