NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 2 – President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga have criticised a ruling by the Supreme Court allowing the LGBTQ community to register lobby groups.
Ruto who was speaking during celebrations to mark International Women’s Day said that Kenya is a Christian nation and would not endorse gayism or lesbianism.
On his part, Raila Odinga said that the Judiciary’s work is to interpret laws and not to make them.
“It’s not the role of the judiciary to make laws. The Constitution recognises the separation of powers,” said Odinga.
He says that according to the constitution, every adult has the right to marry a person of the opposite sex and as it stands gayism is outlawed in the country.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also dismissed the decision issued by the top court on February 24 saying that it goes against our culture.
“That is the devil’s doing. The president of this country is God-fearing, he will do what needs to be done,” said Gachagua.
The decision by the Supreme Court ended an 11-year legal battle by activists seeking the official registration of an LGBTQ+ organisation in Kenya.
According to the judgement by the apex court, the decision by the NGOs Coordination Board not to register lobby groups violated human rights based on sexual orientation.
