MAZANDARAN, Iran April 26 -A senior Shiite cleric and a member of the Assembly of Experts that selects the Iran’s supreme leader was shot dead on Wednesday.
According to Iran state media, Ayatollah Abbas Ali Soleimani 75, was killed in an armed attack in Mazandaran province along the Capian Sea.
An official told the IRNA news agency that the gunman was later arrested.
Reports however indicate that the cleric was not the target.
Soleimani had been at a bank in the city of Babolsar when another man –who had a personal dispute with an employee -grabbed a guard’s firearm and began shooting when the cleric was hit and died on the spot.
He was once the personal representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Iran’s restive Sistan and Baluchestan province.
