NAIROBI, Kenya May 2 -A 44-year-old woman was on Tuesday charged with stealing her nephew’s Sh62,000 and academic certificates and some documents at his house in Blue Estate within Kamukunji, Nairobi.
Esther Otete, who earlier claimed she was yet to be compensated for educating the nephew, was on Tuesday charged at Makadara Law Courts where she denied all the charges.
She was accused of stealing a birth certificate, Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates and Kisii University degree certificates and transcripts.
The nephew, George Momanyi said she visited her and stayed for a week while undergoing treatment at a city hospital.
Momanyi said on October 10, 2022 he withdrew Sh62,000 which he kept in a bag containing his documents.
The following day, the aunt called and informed him that she was leaving. Momanyi returned home in the evening and found the documents and certificates missing.
He then called her but she could not be reached
She later picked the call and informed him that she took the documents because he had not compensated her for educating him.
Momanyi reported the matter at the Shaurimoyo police station and the aunt was summoned but she ignored.
She was later traced and arrested at her employer’s house in Fedha Estate in Embakasi.
She denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Eric Mutunga of Makadara Law Courts and was released on a bond of Sh80, 000.
The case will be mentioned on June 5 before hearing starts on September 5 this year.
