NAKURU Kenya May 24 -Wanted former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga on Wednesday surrendered to police following claims that two guns and 90 rolls of bhang had been recovered in his house.

Njenga was immediately taken to Nakuru court awaiting his possible prosecution. His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, and supporters joined him in court.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives had launched a manhunt for the controversial former Mugiki leader after reports the drugs and weapons were allegedly found in his Nakuru home.

“In the raid conducted at Ngomongo village in Dundori ward, the officers who arrested 8 suspects aged between 37 and 54 also found three rounds of 9mm blank ammunition hidden in one of the rooms,” the DCI said in a statement earlier.

“One of the firearms recovered was a homemade pistol capable of firing while the other one was a Tokarev whose serial number had been defaced,” the statement added.

Njenga had earlier claimed that his homes in Laikipia and Nairobi were raided by security officers on May 12 for unknown reasons. He further denied the claims, terming them politically motivated.

Njenga then linked the raid to a planned funeral of Dedan Kimathi’s wife, Field Marshal Mukami Kimathi on Saturday May 13, 2023 in Njabini, Kinangop, saying police action was meant to stop him from attending the funeral.

According to Njenga, the security officers arrived simultaneously, at 4 am, at his Nakuru, Lavington, Karen and Nyandarua homes where they told workers they were looking for him.

He however attended the funeral in the company of Azimio leader Raila Odinga but was manhandled as he tried to access the main dias.

Raila mentioned him as among those who had accompanied him amid applause from the mourners.

Njenga is not new to such police harassments due to his past links to Mungiki. He has however maintained that he quit being the group’s leader.
