WAJIR Kenya July 5 -Four rifles and a total of 110 rounds of ammunition have been reported missing from Griftu police station armoury in Wajir West Sub-County in unclear circumstances.

Three AK47 rifles, one G3 rifle, 90 rounds of ammunition used in AK47 rifles and another 20 rounds of ammunition for G3 rifles were found missing but the armoury was not broken into.

The Arms Movement Records also indicated that the missing arms and ammunitions were in the armory.

“It was initially thought to be a misplacement but on further scrutiny, the rifles were discovered missing from the station armoury. The following were missing; G3 rifle Serial number G3 F89936, AK47 rifle serial number KP 5501679, AK47 rifle serial number 5503607, and AK47 rifle serial number 5522034,” a report to police headquarters read.

The OCS had reported missing of the weapons on July 3 but despite a though search, none had been found five days later.

Investigations revealed that there are two keys to the armoury with both the station commanders and the armourer keeping each. The OCS Griftu and the amourer were arrested on Thursday morning as investigations commence.

According to a report released on July 5 at 4.30pm, a thorough search was conducted within the station and all police posts within the station including the National Police Reservists since the weapons were reported missing on July 3 but no recovery was made.

Griftu police station is located at the headquarters of Wajir West Sub-County. The Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC) is also domiciled there.
It is suspected that the missing firearms could have been sold to the al-Shabaab militants wrecking havoc in the region.
Griftu area remains one of terror hotspots in Wajir County.
