Raila ditches guzzler, boards matatu on way to work

Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Monday morning ditched his cars and boarded a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) heading to work.

His move excited many Kenyans after learning that Odinga had taken a matatu from his Karen home to the city.

“Embracing the convenience and camaraderie of public transport heading to work this morning,” Odinga captioned a video on his social media.

Inside the matatu plying the Ngong-CBD route, the tout sought the audience of Odinga, decrying the high cost of fuel.

Other passengers told him about the high cost of living, saying the country is not heading in the right direction.

The Azimio leader seemed to be heeding to his directive on June 27, where he asked Kenyans to take up measures such as carpooling in order to prevent the government from collecting more money from the increased VAT on fuel products.

“Let us deny Ruto the fuel tax by limiting consumption of petrol and diesel. One way to do this is to carpool. Let us arrange to make regular journeys in a single vehicle whenever possible; give each other a ride, cut down on non-essential travel and walk instead of driving whenever possible,” Odinga said.

A major protest is slated for Wednesday, July 12 to protest against the high cost of living and especially the passage of the Finance Act 2023.

This is likely to be worse given long-distance drivers and conductors to plan a protest on the same day against a newly introduced law that requires they be re-tested.
