NAIROBI Kenya July 10 -Trespass, interfering with land boundaries and beacons, land fraud, forgery, and forcible entry are the most prevalent land-related offences in Kenya, a study shows.
A Baseline Study on Land-Related Crimes and Offences in Kenya by the National Crime Research Centre (NCRC) has also revealed that the main causes of such offences and crimes are greed by a section of land owners, depravity, and land grabbing.
Other caused have been identified as delay in issuance of title deeds, multiple allocations, sale of land, and land succession disputes.
According to the NCRC, land is an emotive issue in Kenya because it is perceived to bear significant political, economic, socio-cultural and development value to the lives of the people.
This study was aimed at assessing the prevalence of land-related crimes and offences in different parts of the country as a baseline study.
The NCRC is mandated to carry out research into the causes of crime, its prevention and to disseminate the research findings and recommendations to government agencies concerned with the administration of criminal justice.
The establishment of NCRC is in line with the International best practice where research has provided critical information on what works to impact on crime and disorder and has helped to generate programmes that can assist agencies in the criminal justice system.
