NAIROBI Kenya November 13 –
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo on Monday led the first-ever National Tree Planting Day in Hula Hula, Marsabit County.
The day kicked off with 10,000 trees planted, and aim to reach the yearly target of 100,000 trees.
Marsabit County is among the areas classified as having the lowest tree cover of about 2 percent and forest cover of 1.17 percent.
PS Omollo was accompanied by representatives from the private sector and international organizations supporting climate action in the country including William Asiko Rockerfeller Foundation Vice President, Africa region office and Eric Munga – United Nations Office at Nairobi among others.
The tree-growing exercise was on Monday launched at Kiu Wetland in Makindu, Makueni County by President William Ruto on Monday.
At the County level, tree growing activities were spearheaded by Cabinet Secretaries with each championing tree growing activities in at least two counties.
National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) will be supporting the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry in coordinating the exercise which is part of Kenya’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme – towards the growing of 15 billion trees.
According to the government, there are 150 million plantable seedlings at Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and Kenya Forest Services (KFS) nurseries across the country, as well as nurseries of other Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government.
The government is aiming to plant at least 100 million seedlings on Monday across the country with the national target for the short rains season being 500 million seedlings.
