Nyeri County – A shooting incident at the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation facility in Mweiga has left a police officer injured on Monday. The incident, reported under Occurrence Book number 18/17/12/2023 at 0626 hrs, unfolded during a duty changeover.

According to reports from Kieni West Sub-County CIPU Commander, Mr. Albert Kimothe, Corporal Joseph Marui Gitari was relieved of his duty by Inspector Charles Mwangi due to apparent intoxication. The officer was instructed to return to the vehicle while arrangements were made for his replacement.

According to the Police, Corporal Gitari boarded the vehicle and discharged three bullets from his CZ rifle (Serial No. AP432913). The intended target, Inspector Charles Mwangi, narrowly escaped harm, but two bullets struck the officer. One hit his right hand, and the other lodged in his waist.

The injured officer was swiftly transported to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition, receiving medical attention.

The suspect, Corporal Gitari, managed to escape the scene using a private vehicle, flagged down after being disarmed. He fled in police uniform, and his current whereabouts are unknown.

The incident is under investigation by the DCI Kieni West, with updates to follow as the case progresses.
