NAIROBI Kenya February 17, 2024 -A Police Constable attached to Githurai police station was on Friday night robbed of her firearm in unclear circumstances in Kasarani, Nairobi.

Constable Mercy Mamboleo reported that while on night patrol duties with her colleague, she was confronted by three men armed with a pistol who robbed her of the firearm before escaping into the nearby bush.

The two officers were on patrol within Kiwanjani area when the incident occurred.

“The officer was robbed of her Scorpion firearm, serial number B385784 loaded with 24 rounds of ammunition. Investigations have been launched,” regional police headquarters said.

The scene was visited by senior officers accompanied by detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) visited the scene and launched investigations.

Concerns raised as the latest incident puts another deadly weapon into the hands of criminals, despite the ongoing all-out war on armed gangs across the country.

Several police firearms have been stolen in the last few months, raising security concerns.

On February 2, an AK47 and a G3 rifles were stolen from Kabonge police station in Kirinyaga county. After investigations by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), it was established that one of the firearms had been stolen by Kennedy Mwangi Wangeci.

Mwangi 25, hails from Mugure area of Ndia was ambushed by the detectives who were acting on an intelligence report, before the AK47 rifle and 18 rounds of ammunition were discovered buried in a shallow hole outside his house.

“Two police officers from whom the AK47 and another G3 rifle were stolen are currently under investigation. Allegedly, the firearms were stolen after the cell sentry and report office attendant stepped out of their areas of deployment, leaving the firearms unattended at the reception area,” DCI headquarters said.

In another case in September 2023, a G3 rifle was discovered missing after scrutiny of the arms movement of Kiaruyu Police Post in Mathira East, Nyeri County.

The rifle was on February 14 recovered at the house of George Mutembei within Ndunyuruma village of Rwarela-Buuri East in Meru County, by a team of DCI Operations detectives backed up by their counterparts from Mugae Police Post.

The suspect escaped, leaving the firearm in the hands of his wife, Priscilla Ntinyari.
