NAIROBI Kenya February 28 -Two police officers based at Merti police station were arrested for demanding a bribe of Sh50,000 from a suspect they had arrested for allegedly being a member of the outlawed Al-Shabaab terror group as a condition for releasing him.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives on Tuesday said officers David Irungu and Hassan Liban Hassan also robbed the suspect of an additional Sh57,000.

“The police officers, while armed with a rifle, frisked the complainant and robbed him of an additional Sh57,000,” EACC said.

The two officers were charged with robbery with violence and bribery charges in Isiolo and pleaded not guilty.

The court released them on a cash bail of Sh300,000 or surety bond of Sh500,000 and the hearing is scheduled for May 27, 2024.
