NAIROBI Kenya June 3 -A motorist who assaulted and injured a traffic police officer in Mirema, Kasarani on Sunday morning has been arrested.
Ian Ngige Njoroge, 19 was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at his residence in Green Span estate on Sunday night.
Njoroge had assaulted Corporal Jacob Ogendo along Kamiti Road at Mirema junction after a traffic infraction.
“The officer spotted a motor vehicle making a U-turn on the road causing obstruction to other road users. When he approached the vehicle, the driver attempted to turn but the vehicle hit the road kerb and got stuck,” police said.
The officer got into the car and instructed the driver to drive to the police station. He claimed that the motorist stopped the car and drew a sword, threatening to attack him. He jumped out of the car but the driver followed him and attacked him with blows and kicks.
The officer was later rescued by members of the public and taken to hospital. One suspect, Peter Kiragu was arrested at the scene by the police and later led the officers to where the suspect was hiding.
The incident, which was recorded by some members of the public, had sparked outrage on social media.
Njoroge has told the police that he was enraged after the traffic police officer demanded hefty bribe from him.
