NAIROBI Kenya June 5 -A senior National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer died by suicide on Tuesday at his residence in Kilimani.
Tom Mboya Adala, an Assistant Director based at NIS headquarters Ruaraka, and who is said to have been battling depression is reported to have shot himself in the head inside his servant quarters at Kirichwa Villas.
His death brings to over 15, the number of people who have died by suicide since Sunday, June 2.
The deceased’s nephew said they last saw him on Monday when he went to the bedroom upstairs to sleep. On Tuesday, they woke up but until 9am, the deceased had not come downstairs for breakfast.
They checked in his room but he could not be found, prompting them to inquire from the watchman if he had driven out of the compound.
They finally checked around the compound and found his body lying dead inside the servant quarters. Preliminary investigations revealed that the officer had shot himself using his official Glock 19 pistol.
Detectives recovered one spent cartridge and a magazine loaded with 3 rounds of ammunition. In his bedroom another spare magazine was recovered loaded with 13 rounds. A suicide note, written on black note book, was also found placed on the bed.
The body was transferred to Lee Funeral Home as investigations commenced. The deceased was the son of Ambassador Adala Otuko who served as the Kenyan ambassador to the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) between 1964 and 1968. He also became the Luo Ker (Elder).
Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo has mourned the officer saying his death was a big loss to the country.
“Adala was a wonderful friend to many and, until his demise, an officer with the National Intelligence Service (NIS). His death is a profound loss to the country,” the PS said.
On Monday, another Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier, Jimna Mwangi Itehe who had just been transferred from Narok to Wajir also died by suicide by hanging himself in Kiangiciri area of Kasarani.
According to the wife, Mwangi 35, left on Sunday at around 11am and never came back. The wife left for work on Monday and when she came back at around 8pm, she found the door locked and she used a spare key to open the door and found the body.
The body was transferred to Kenyatta University mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Police reports indicate that at least 15 other people have died since Sunday.
In one of the cases on Monday, David Chege Njau 40 also died by suicide by hanging himself on a tree in unclear circumstances within the parents’ farm in Marmanet, Laikipia county. The body is preserved at Nyahururu hospital mortuary.
