Four Al-Shabaab Militants Neutralized, Weapons Cache Recover in Mandera

A multi-agency team successfully neutralized four Al-Shabaab militants and seized a substantial cache of weapons in Mandera County on Friday.

The operation, conducted in Banisa Sub-County near the Kenya-Somalia border, was intelligence-led and aimed at dismantling terrorist activities in the region.

The security team recovered a variety of heavy and light weaponry, including a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), four RPG warheads, a PKM machine gun, three AK-47 rifles, seven AK-47 magazines, five pistols each with a magazine, and five mobile phones.

The recovery of these weapons is seen as a significant blow to the operational capabilities of the Al-Shabaab militants in the area.

Despite the successful neutralization of four militants, eight others managed to escape, albeit with injuries.

The security forces are actively pursuing these injured militants to prevent further threats and dismantle any remaining elements of the group.

The operation was a result of precise intelligence and collaboration with local residents.

The security team in Mandera have expressed gratitude to the residents of Banisa for their support and cooperation, which was crucial in the success of the mission.

Somalia-based militia group Al-Shabaab earlier launched an attack targeting members of the Special Operations Group (SOG) on patrol in Guba, near the Banisa/Derkale border in West Mandera County.

The attack occurred at approximately 1745 hours, resulting in the deaths of five SOG officers and injuries to six others, according to a police incident report dated July 12, 2024.
