NAIROBI Kenya July 17, 2024 -The suspect arrested in connection to the mysterious murder of women whose bodies were dumped at an abandoned quarry in Kware area of Embakasi on Tuesday claimed that he was tortured to confess to the killings.
Through lawyer John Maina, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha disowned a confession associated with him by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), adding that he was not in any way involved in the killings nor did he have any association with one who could have been involved.
Appearing before Principle Magistrate Irene Gichobi at Makadara Law courts, Jumaisi said he was tortured “to confess and own up things that are alien to him.”
He opposed the DCI Homicide Unit to detain him for 30 days to conclude investigations into at least 40 cases of murder suspected to be linked to him.
Inspector Patrick Wachira of the DCI Homicide however rubbished the allegations saying that only one police officer was assigned to the suspect to record his statement.
“The respondent was geo-located at the same location together with one of his victims namely Josephine Mulongo Owino the day she went missing, thereafter some money was withdrawn from Josephine’s KCB account and which was shared as proceeds of crime with one of the respondent’s numbers registered with another ID card,” the DCI said in an affidavit presented before court.
The DCI had sought to have Khalusha detained for 30 days pending the conclusion of the probe into the murders, saying if released he is likely to continue with the criminal activities.
The detectives also told the court that they also needed more time to trace witnesses and families of the victims who are scattered across the country.
“The team will conduct other police procedures which include but not limited to finger printing, DNA sampling, Identification parades, and statement recording,” the DCI team argued.
The DCI had on Monday claimed that Jumaisi had confessed to killing at least 42 people but the suspect yesterday said he made the remarks under duress while being tortured.
Inspector Patrick Wachira of the DCI Homicide said he and his team were investigating cases where one Rose Atieno and at least 41 unidentified female victims suspected to have been murdered by Khalusha on diverse dates between June 2022 and July 11, 2024.
The detectives said there was overwhelming evidence to establish a prima facie case of murder against the suspect and others not before court before recommending murder charges.
He told the court that the suspect had numerous mobile telephone numbers which were not registered under his national ID card and they feared he could continue committing other crimes.
The Investigating officer also said there are several cases of missing persons reports mostly female victims which has been reported at Kware police station and other police stations within Nairobi county.
Principle Magistrate Gichobi however finally allowed the DCI to detain Khalusha at any police station for the requested 30 days in order to complete investigations.
Detectives also said at the time of his arrest on Monday morning, the suspect had also lured another woman, only identified as Susan, and whom he had also planned to kill.
“At the time of his arrest, the suspect was attempting to lure another victim into his house. We had posited many theories but now it is crystalizing that we are dealing with a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect and dignity for human life,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohammed Amin said.
According to the DCI the suspected serial killer was found in possession of ten sacks that were similar to those which had been used to stuff the bodies recovered at the dumpsite. He had intended to use the sacks to stuff and finally dispose of his next victims.
