A Malindi Sub County Development official is staring at a possible ten year jail term after the Ethics and Anticorruption Commission (EACC) charged him on allegations of demanding a Kes 24,500 bribe.
Mr Johnson Mwalimu Mwabati, allegedly demanded the bribe as an inducement to assist a resident obtain a clearing certificate that would enable him develop his plot, and for the release of his confiscated construction tools.
The matter was reported to the EACC Upper Coast Regional Office necessitating the arrest.
The Commission says, it conducted an operation and arrested Mr Mwabati on Tuesday while receiving the alleged bribe.
Mr Mwabati denied two counts of receiving a bribe before Malindi Law Courts Chief Magistrate Hon. Elizabeth Usui.
The accused has been released on a Kes 50,000 cash bail awaiting full trial.Sections 6 and 18 of the Anti-Bribery Act No. 47 of 2016 prohibits state officials from giving or receiving bribes; spelling that such, “public officer or individual is punishable through a fine not exceeding Kes 5 million or imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years, or both”.
EACC says, the arrest is part of the ongoing crackdown on bribery at service delivery points.
