NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 28- Three suspects were Wednesday arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after they were intercepted at the Nairobi-Nakuru highway ferrying a huge consignment of bhang under the guise of also transporting maize.

Acting on intelligence leads DCI detectives attached at the parklands police station intercepted a Mitsubishi vehicle at Kikopey area.

It is at this point that the occupants, a driver, and two passengers, told the detectives that their vehicle was ferrying a consignment of 100 bags of maize, (90 kg worth) from Uganda allegedly destined for Voi in Taita Taveta county.

But upon, search, it turned out that there was more than they had declared.

“The three suspects were shortly afterward transported to Nairobi to the DCI parklands offices,” a detective privy to the operation told Shahidi News.

Further assessment of the consignment by the detectives confirmed that approximately 19 sacks had been carrying 50kgs worth of Cannabis Sativa, Bhang.

The suspects are in police custody awaiting to be charged in court. The bhang was preserved as an exhibit.

Police have in the past conducted high-level operations along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway as it is a prolific corridor for drug smugglers from within Kenya and neighboring Uganda.
