NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 16- After Kenya’s darkest week that saw dozens succumb to COVID-19 disease and thousands new infections, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Monday convened a special meeting to review the situation.
The National Emergency Response Committee (NERC) will look at ways to reverse the trend and identify any loopholes in enforcing the health protocols.
Over the weekend, the country lost four doctors within 24 hours prompting calls for an industrial action by the Doctor’s union, which accused the government of negligence.
“We shall deliberate on issues affecting healthcare workers countrywide including the supply of the PPEs and other enabling measures as they go about combating the virus among our people,” CS Kagwe said on Sunday, in a statement.
Meanwhile, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru on Monday announced closure of county headquarters for two weeks, over surge in Covid-19 cases.
She encouraged county officials to work virtually to avoid further infections.
“Despite the efforts to keep the offices running and staff continuing to physically interact while physically while strictly observing COVID-19 protocols; these have not borne desired results. If anything, cases appear to be increasing by the day at the headquarters,” she said.
The disease has claimed more 1,200 lives in the country.
