SIAYA, Kenya, Nov, 20 – The bodies of 10 people who drowned while on a boat in Lake Victoria near Honge beach have finally been recovered according to police.
All the 10 bodies were Friday retrieved by divers following the Wednesday morning boat accident on Lake Victoria.
Officials said the bodies were retrieved by a joint team drawn from the Kenya Coast Guard and Kenya Revenue Authority.
10 others survived the boat accident after they were rescued by the Kenya Coast Guard and local fishermen.
The victims were travelling from Uganda heading to Usenge’ Beach when it capsized at about 5AM Wednesday according to witnesses. Officials suspect the boat was overloaded causing it to capsize.
The boat had left Uganda on Tuesday morning and those on board were set to arrive at the beach at night.
Things however turned tragic as the boat capsized due to heavy winds at the lake despite efforts by those on board to attempt to manoeuvre through the strong tides.
Siaya police boss Francis Kooli announced the tragic news saying that an identification process will commence immediately. The victims are believed to be of both Kenyan and Ugandan nationality.
“We are in communication with Ugandan authorities and loved ones will be allowed to identify the bodies and proceed to bury them.” Said Kooli.
