MANDERA, Kenya, Nov, 29 – Five people were injured Sunday after suspected Al-Shabab militants attacked a police escort vehicle between the Jabibar and Rhamu road in Mandera county.
According to police reports, the vehicle was escorting a Nairobi bound bus from Mandera town when it hit an improvised explosive device, IED, that had been hidden on the road minutes after departing Mandera.
Five people, all police officers were injured during the Sunday afternoon incident before being rushed to Rhamu hospital.
Police have told Shahidi News that two officers sustained minor injuries while three others remain in critical condition and have been airlifted to Nairobi.
The suspected militants are yet to be found as police launch investigations.
Mandera, which continues to experience high levels of rainfall as many parts of the country is said to be susceptible to terror attacks from the Al-Shabab during this period.
According to police reports between 2019 to this date,10 terror attacks targeting buses and other vehicles have been reported along the area.
Police have in recent years escorted public transport vehicles in areas largely targeted by terrorists from their points of departure to areas regarded as, ‘safe zones’.
