ISIOLO, Kenya, Dec 1- At least 10 people have been killed in clashes between two pastoralist groups at Quri area in Isiolo County, police have said.
The clashes happened on Tuesday at around 6am.
Isiolo County Commissioner Herman Shambi, who spoke to Shahidi News, described the events as “unfortunate and tragic.”
“Things on the ground at the moment are quite tense and emotions are very high. We have so far dispatched a team to the area to assess the full scale of the situation,” Shambi said.
Shambi told Shahidi News that a security team from Isiolo and Garissa has since converged at Quri where they held meetings with locals, urging them to peacefully co-exist with their neighbours.
“When we were there yesterday (on Monday), everything seemed okay but it turns out some people might have been pretending while at the same time planning something sinister. Two wrongs do not make a right. Revenge will never solve any problem,” the County Commissioner said.
More officers are set to deployed in the area until calm resumes.
Police are also planning on holding peaceful talks that will also incorporate local leadership to avert future violence.
“We are urging residents to remain calm,” he said.
The clashes started on Monday when four people were killed.
