NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7- President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday said he will continue using the military in executing various developmental projects, amidst rising concerns.
The President said his intention is not to militarize civilian led institutions, but he is after effectiveness.
The President who was speaking on Monday at the Bomas of Kenya, during the launch of ‘Kenya Ni Mimi’ Youth Campaign initiative, said all civil servants including the Cabinet Secretaries should emulate the Kenya Defence Forces.
“I am not militarizing the country,” the President said.
What are some of the areas the Kenya Defence Forces have taken over?
Nairobi County is being led by a military general after Governor Mike Sonko ceded four key functions to the National Government.
Following his oath of secrecy, Major General Mohammed Badi is also attending Cabinet meetings, after president Kenyatta invoked executive order number 3 of 2020.
“Look at what he has achieved in a period of a few months,” the President pointed out.
The military were also involved in the renovation of the Kisumu port and a ship that is currently operational and has delivered more than 35 million litres of fuel to Uganda.
Government officials had cited a billion figure to rehabilitate the port and the vessel.
The military are also rehabilitating the Kenya railway meter gauge railway line to Kisumu and have since completed the one to Nanyuki alongside the National Youth Service.
Recently, President Kenyatta put the management of the then debt ridden Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) under KDF.
KMC is now under the Department of Defence and according to the government, it has already cleared a huge chunk of debts owed to farmers.
