MERU, Kenya, Dec 8- Police in Meru are pursuing a man who nearly killed his wife after prematur ejaculating during an intimate session over the weekend.
The man, identified as David Gitonga, started accusing his wife Esther Kambura of being the cause of his sexual prowess shortcomings .
But what does a premature ejaculation have to do with his wife Esther Kambura?
The man, his wife who spoke to Shahidi News, said he would have performed better were it not for “your cheating tendencies.”
Agitated about his ‘performance’, Gitonga grabbed a machete he had hidden under the bed and started shaving his wife’s hair forcefully.
“For some weird reason, he started saying I was sleeping with other men and that was the cause of (sexual) problems,” a teary Kambura said.
After the woman enquired why he was becoming violent, the man, agitated, slapped her several times.
He then took the machete, brutally hitting her on the back of her head as she bled profusely.
“I thought I would die. Imagine at one point you were having a good moment then this,” pausing as if in deep thought, Kambura added.
The more she cried and screamed for help, the more the man she has called her husband and father to her eight year old son became agitated.
At some point, the man tried to chop off one of her legs, but Kambura managed to block the machete using her hands.
As a result, two fingers were chopped off.
“Neighbours including his brothers managed to break down the door however I had already sustained serious injuries,” Kambura narrated.
When she saw the door wide open, she fled to safety and nearly bled to death but was later rushed to hospitals by neighbours.
Her husband equally managed to escape and is yet to be found by authorities.
It is an incident that has left an entire village shocked, Purity Muchai, a neighbour said.
“Eunice had no problem with anyone. She is a hardworking woman that is loved by everyone in our community,” Muchai said, hailing Kambura as a woman of dignity.
“We know the couple very well and have even held discussions with them over their marital disputes, but we never imagined it would get to this point.”
According Ripples International Executive Director Mercy Chidi, cases of gender-based violence have become rampant in Meru County.
Such cases, she said were common in Tigania area of the County, but are increasingly becoming prevalent in other parts of the vast County.
At Consolata Hospital in Nkubu, where Kambura is recuperating, Chidi said several cases of gender based violence have already been reported.
Chidi has advised couples to seek professional help instead of resulting to violence.
She asked Meru County Government to expeditiously construct a women safe house, where victims of domestic violence will be seeking refuge.
Kambura is meanwhile pleading for help saying “the man has ruined my life. I used my hands to earn a living but see what he has done to me.”
Police have launched a manhunt for her husband.
The government has equally raised concerns over raising cases of gender-based violence and has warned of taking stern action against perpetrators.
On Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta reiterated the warning, while urging victims to speak out for authorities to act.
