KIRINYAGA, Kenya, Jan 4- A prison warden killed a police officer before he committed suicide in a love triangle incident in Mwea East area, Kirinyaga county.
The warden identified as Kering Kipkosgei shot dead police officer Boniface Mithamo after a brief confrontation over a woman on Sunday night.
According to police, Mithamo had apparently gone to the house of his former wife who is also a prison officer unannounced and found Kipkosgei therein.
The woman was apparently cohabiting with Kipkosgei.
This prompted a fight before the woman separated them.
It was then that Kipkosgei went for his pistol and shot Mithamo on the neck killing him before he turned the gun on himself.
Detectives attached at the Wanguru police station recovered a Ceska pistol,11 rounds of ammunition, four spent catridges, and 1 bullet, registered to the Mwea GK Prison. A subaru vehicle was also impounded.
The bodies were moved to the mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Such cases have been on the rise in the service at an alarming rate. Research has shown exposure to guns has a link to such incidents.
