BARINGO, Kenya, Jan, 11 – Tension remains high in Kapedo, Turkana county after one person was shot dead by suspected bandits in fresh attacks in the volatile region.
The suspected armed bandits, police and locals said, had stormed the Kapedo village at around 4pm Monday, firing in the air as locals fled for their lives.
Police leading the operation on the ground have told Shahidi News, the deceased, a middle aged man was shot by the armed bandits as he attempted to flee.
The bandits are reportedly from Turkana area bordering Baringo county.
A guest house in Kapedo was also set a blaze during the attacks.
Students from Kapedo Mixed Secondary School were quickly evacuated and taken to a secure location by local security teams who quickly arrived at the scene.
Residents who spoke to Shahidi News said the bandits had initially surrounded the village demanding that their stolen livestock be returned despite members of the communities saying they had not stolen anything.
A contingent of officers from the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) and General Service Unit (GSU) have since been deployed to the area.
Locals have been urged to remain indoors.
Just two weeks ago, a security operation was conducted along the Baringo-Turkana border following banditry attacks.
