MARSABIT,Kenya, Mar,20 – A light aircraft on route to North Horr crashed at Kofia Mbaya region in Marsabit County killing two pilots onboard.
According to police reports the fixed wing plane had just departed Nairobi for Marsabit when it ran into a heavy fog on Saturday morning at around 10AM.
The aircraft which departed Wilson Airport at 8:18AM had been hired by Marsabit county officials who were to be flown to the remote village of Illeret within North Horr sub-county for a peace meeting and nutrition smart survey chaired by the county governor.
Both pilots, Captain Brian Migwi and co-pilot John Brian died on impact.
Eastern Regional police boss Noah Mwivanda said they are yet to know the cause of the accident.
“Experts will tell us what happened,” he said. As police quickly secured the scene.
Marsabit police commander Samuel Mutunga also told Shahidi News that,”residents in the area noticed that the plane was wobbly in the skies” perhaps indicating that it was experiencing technical difficulties.
Light aircrafts plying the Marsabit route particularly in the morning experience visibility challenges due to the foggy weather.
Officials said the 5YJKN type C208 Operator Aeronav crashed as it navigated a foggy place while flying low.
The Kenya civil Aviation in a statement revealed that the aircraft accident investigation department (AAID) has already dispatched a team to the ground and is conducting investigations into the cause of the crash.
The bodies of the deceased have since been taken to the Marsabit referral hospital morgue.
On April 6, 2006 a team of 14 people on a peace mission died at the same site (Now Mount Marsabit Shrine) when their plane crashed.
